When we first met Azra we were not sure what to expect. Companions from the Middle East are exceptionally rare. In her own words Azra is: “patient, honourable, laid-back and confident. I’m a bit of a contradiction. I’m from the east and cherish my cultural roots but I’ve lived in London for so long that I’ve adopted the best bits of your culture too.”
“I love London, and English. I fell in love with the language – that’s why I moved here 10 years ago – in my country I found that even English teachers struggled to have real conversations in English, so when I graduated from university I moved here right away.
As well as an interest in languages, I tend to read a lot, especially if it’s psychology, business, economics or classical Greek philosophy (and my guilty pleasure is crime novels. One of the best things about England is the choice of whodunits).
I’m a learning addict. I’m always looking for ways to improve myself -and not just intellectually as I think it’s important to have lots of different interests. I like sport. I play tennis every weekend. I’m a trained massage therapist. Oh! And I’m a trained belly dancer too. I always forget to tell people that. It’s part of my culture and I get a lot of pleasure from sharing it with other people, whether it’s teaching or dancing myself.”
When you meet Azra you will be at once at ease. She’s very easy to talk to. From a very good family and has taste and decency in abundance, yet everything she does and say has an enticing, sultry undertone. It’s the east meets west contradiction. If you only heard her speak you would swear she is conservative whilst if you only saw the way she dressed, you would think her a liberal London socialite. |
